Spraying Electric

Brown Guitars is located in Big Bras d’Or, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.  This ruggedly beautiful area on the Atlantic Ocean is surrounded by mixed hard and softwood forest, and gives me inspiration for art and creativity.

After attending the Roberto Venn School of Luthiery in Phoenix, Arizona back in 2001, I quickly set out to gain more experience in the art of repairing and restoring musical instruments.  I pounded the pavement and knocked on a lot of doors looking for someone who would take me on as an apprentice.  I wound up working in the repair shop of Jules St. Michel, a very talented and respected luthier in Montreal.  This gave me a lot of insight into the running of a Luthier shop, in addition to honing my skills.  Foremost, I learned that I wanted more than anything to do things my own way.

After moving back to Cape Breton Island in 2003, I opened my own workshop.  I immediately began taking in repairs, and focusing on the construction of fine sounding solid body electric and acoustic guitars.

The art of luthiery is an ongoing learning experience. New techniques and different types of projects provide ongoing challenges.Working with different finishes, as well as subtle experimentation with different woods and thicknesses ensures I’m always fine tuning my craft.   A lot of improvising is often needed to get the job done, and this keeps it interesting for me.  I am very fortunate to have blended my love of woodworking and music into a career, and will continue to put my heart and soul into building the best sounding guitars I can.
